Avoidable blindness: a world problem.

چکیده
Daar is vier biljoen mense in die wêreld. Veertig miljoen van hulle is blind. As die verhouding tussen bevolkingsaanwas en blindheid nie verm inder nie, sal die syfer teen die einde van die eeu verdubbel wees. Ten minste 80% van die wêreld se blindheid kom voor in die ontwikkelende lande van A sië, Afrika en Latyns-Am erika. Die Internasionale Agentskap vir die Voorkom ing van Blindheid (I .A .V .B .) het vasgestel dat daar vier hoofoorsake van blindheid is wat voorkeur in die wêreldgesondheidsprogram m e moet kry, nl. tragoom , katarak, onchocercis en bindvliesdorheid. Voorkom bare blindheid is die om vattende term wat gem aak is om sowel voorkom bare as genesende blindheid te dek. Die werk begin met ’n opname van gem eenskappe, m obilisasie van m iddele, ’n tydperk van konsolidasie en uiteindelik toesig. Dit is gebiedend noodsaaklik dat oogversorging as integrerende deel van prim ëre gesondheidsorg beskou moet word en dat die werk van die S. A. Nasionale Raad vir B lindes, gesondheidsowerhede en die versorgende beroepe beter koórdineer word om hegter spanwerk te lewer.
